Rivers in the Desert
Yesterday morning we went to the Choo Choo Swap Meet in Bishop...browsing around I came to a vendor who had a bunch of old books, when one caught my attention by the title of Rivers in the Desert, by Mrs. Charles Cowman, a classic and wonderful compilation (from all the great, classic authors) style daily devotional. To make it better it is a 1937 edition! Yeah, this made my day, no, my week! Its beautiful, and might just get me hooked on collecting old books. The best part is that I used the book as an opportunity to talk with the man who was selling it. Come to find out is grandfather was a baptist preacher, and he had basically had the word pounded into him as a little boy (he could quote plenty). He said himself though that his granddaughter told him that he has it all in is head, but his heart is still unchanged. He spoke of how life is a great gamble. How people wait until they get hit by a car and survive to get right with God. I encouraged him not to wait till such a thing happens, that eternity is never worth a gamble. He talked about the end times, and I asked him if he would be ready. It was really awesome because he has a lot of Word in him (and God's word does not return void) - it was cool to stir it up in him, and hopefully some provoking thoughts to not wait till its too late to let that word transform his heart. So yeah, it was so cool not only to find the book, but to find an open door for a great conversation because of it!
